Red Shoes in the Gun Room? Don't mind if I do! Views: 3499

Rehearsals were a general hoot this week, we were all experimenting with being dopey and happy. There was a couple of very lovely improvisatory moments, of material we will probably never be able to recall, and we have pretty much learnt all the newer folky ones. One song, River Runs Away, about falling out of love is doing well and my melody is now developing harmonies which is a sure sign the music is progressing. Most satisfying Cool

So, Saturday, my eldest son was quite perturbed when I told him I was going to be on the door at a gig for the evening. He calmed down a bit when I reassured him the band were generally very respectable, the audience would almost certainly be well behaved and that I would in fact be collecting ticket money NOT being a bouncer! The Birmingham based band Red Shoes  http://www.redshoes-music.com/ were in the Gun Room at the RMA in Southsea for an evening of folky delight supported by Della Perrett  http://www.myspace.com/search/music?q=della%20perrett&ac=t

Della kicked off with a set of punchy songs with her distinctive vocal style and great rhythmic guitar, all well received and joined in the Carolyn and Mark on Tenor Sax later in the evening adding a really beautiful layer of sound not usually heard with folky style music. Red Shoes were in fine form, taking it 'Down to the Well' to start and playing many tracks from both their fine albums 'Ring Around the World' and 'All the Good Friends' recorded in the auspicious company of the likes of Ric Sanders (my favourite Fairporter, see previous blogs), Chris Leslie, Dave Swarbrick and Dave Pegg. Carolyn leads most songs and others Mark leads on with harmonies from Carolyn, their voices blend beautifully together in a web of aural delight! When the song 'Something Wicked this Way Comes' began the door opened behind me and I was convinced a politician must have entered, but it was only Dan Ogus, part-time DJ and occasional gig-organiser, coming back from the bar! A lovely intimate gig in the Gun Room, great way to enjoy a Saturday evening!
